American Idol Auditions, fun, heartbreak - and cheeseheads

Sam Lautmann hoped that, if her costume didn't win her a spot on "American Idol," her song selection would. Lautmann, 18, showed up early Wednesday morning at the Bradley Center to audition for the popular Fox reality show dressed as a beer can and wearing a cheesehead to "represent Wisconsin." The can's song of choice: "On, Wisconsin!" Unfortunately, Lautmann got nervous and forgot the words after the chorus.

"But I represented the state for sure!" she said with a laugh after it was all over. "And it was a great experience, even if my dreams were crushed."More than 10,000 excited people lined up Wednesday for their chance at stardom and a chance to make the first cut to appear on "American Idol." Many of them arrived at the Bradley Center late Tuesday night in a bid to win a spot at the front of the line. By 6 a.m., the gates were packed with energetic singers hoping to be the next Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood.

In the six months since American Idol viewers elected Kris Allen 2009's best singer, the Jacksonville, Arkansas native has played concerts in more than 50 cities, as well as co-written and recorded the dozen songs (plus three bonus tracks) that comprise his major-label debut. In advance of the November 17 release of Kris Allen, we spoke to him by phone about the stresses of a speedy album-making process and why Kanye's outburst at the VMAs didn't affect his record's track list. The Idol finale was on May 20, then you were on the Idols tour from July until the beginning of September. That didn't leave you with much time to record this album.
Words do not even begin to express my confusion and sick, splodey delight. The runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol, Adam Lambert (Yes, the Goth kid), has made a 2012 music video. It's him walking through explosions, naturally.
